SPORT4UNITY

Sport4Unity: promoting social inclusion through sport

Sport4Unity is a European project that promotes social inclusion of young refugees and people from vulnerable backgrounds through sport. Its main aim is to create spaces for people to come together and learn from one another, in order to develop a world based on understanding, acceptance and equality.

The project brings together organisations working with migrants, refugees and other socially vulnerable groups. Each partner organises sports and educational activities based on their own areas of expertise, with the aim of integrating children and young people into the local community. All activities are free and will continue until the end of the project.

Partner

The lead organisation for the project is the Croatian association SuperKid škola sporta and, besides Popoli Insieme, it involves two other European organisations: GK Zaprešić from Croatia and Sport Evolution Alliance from Portugal.

Thanks to Sport4Unity project, we worked to promote social inclusion for children and kids with a history of migration through sport, by encouraging intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and strengthening bonds within communities.

The many activities we carried out across Croatia, Italy and Portugal (the project’s partner countries) involved more than 100 people with a migrant background, including children, young people and adults. Feedback on the project have been positive: in particular, those who took part in the activities reported an increased sense of connection with the rest of the group and found that sport had made it easier for them to settle into a new environment.

During this project, we also discussed sport as a way to encourage dialogue between cultures within educational and school programs; one of the project’s key outcomes is a digital manual designed for coaches, PE teachers and all those professionals who work with children and young people in a sports context. This manual aims to provide practical guidelines and ideas for workshops addressing the issues of inclusion, diversity and the prevention of all forms of discrimination.
