The European project EATWISE is entering its most relevant phase, with the presentation of two key documents that capture the heart and soul of the entire journey. After months of hard work and collaboration, the EATWISE Cookbook and Guidebook on sustainable intercultural food are finally available.
EATWISE, an acronym for Empowering All Together With Inclusive Sustainable Eating, clearly defines the project’s main goal: to raise awareness among young migrants and their communities about more sustainable lifestyles, using food as a bridge to unite cultures and build a stronger connection with our planet. Funded by the European Commission through the Italian Youth Agency, the project involves six partner organizations from Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania, Portugal, Turkey, and, of course, Popoli Insieme from Italy.
To create the Cookbook and Guidebook, the project engaged over 120 young migrants in a journey to rediscover their culinary traditions. Through interviews and focus groups, we focused on everyday meals, based on vegetables and legumes, prepared for family, and designed to minimize waste. This approach transformed intimate memories linked to times of scarcity into a source of pride and resilience, celebrating the ingenuity and creativity of those who made the best of what they had.
Cookbook and Guidebook: a journey of flavors and sustainability
The EATWISE Cookbook is a culinary journey that gathers 30 sustainable and intercultural recipes. It’s more than just a list of dishes; it’s a resource for everyone who wants to promote conscious eating that respects different traditions. Each recipe is a story, a small piece of culture that celebrates the richness of global food traditions with a special focus on sustainability.
The Guidebook on sustainable intercultural food, on the other hand, is a resource designed to explore culinary practices that foster cultural integration and environmental sustainability. The guide shows that sustainability is not a modern concept but a value deeply rooted in many traditions passed down through generations, from reusing leftovers to using local ingredients. It’s an invaluable tool for educators and practitioners working with migrant communities, offering ideas to integrate these good practices into daily life.
Next Steps: Cooking Shows and Documentary
With the publication of the Cookbook and Guidebook, the EATWISE project is heading into its final phase. The coming months will be dedicated to multiplier events, designed to spread the project’s results to a wider audience. Popoli Insieme and its partners will organize cooking shows to bring the collected recipes to life and continue promoting culinary exchange as a tool for inclusion.
All of the project’s experiences and activities will be compiled into a final documentary, managed by the Romanian association Asociatia CPDIS. It will tell the story of EATWISE from its beginning to its conclusion, capturing the stories, flavors, and faces that made it all possible.
