EATWISE Card Game: a journey into intercultural food through recipes, traditions, and sustainability

Within the European project EATWISE – Empowering All Together With Inclusive Sustainable Eating – a new educational tool has been designed and developed with the aim of engaging young people, volunteers, educators, and communities in a direct, participatory, and fun way: the EATWISE card game.

Following the creation of the Eatwise Cookbook, the Guide on Sustainable Intercultural Food, and the Training Manual dedicated to non-formal education methodologies, the card game represents an additional output of the project, capable of transforming the themes of food sustainability and intercultural dialogue into a concrete learning and sharing experience.

The EATWISE project, developed by an international partnership composed of  Associazione Popoli Insieme ODV, Edu Playground, Agora Aveiro, Mano Europa, Asociatia Centrul pentru Dezvoltarea Instrumentelor Structurale e Belen Kaymakamligi, promotes an idea of sustainable food that starts from people, from traditions, and from the stories that food carries with it.

A game to talk about food, sustainability, and inclusion

The EATWISE card game was created with the aim of stimulating dialogue between different cultures through food. During the game, participants discover ingredients, traditional recipes, sustainable practices, and eating habits from different countries, with particular attention to the experiences of migrant communities.

It is not just a quiz or a traditional educational game: the card game invites players to tell their stories, share personal experiences, and reflect on the impact of their food choices. In this way, food becomes a common language capable of creating connections, breaking down stereotypes, and enhancing cultural diversity.

Through cooperative dynamics and moments of dialogue, the game encourages curiosity, listening, and active participation, placing at the center the values that guide the entire EATWISE project: inclusion, sustainability, and shared learning.

A versatile educational tool

The game can be used in many educational and community contexts. It is designed as a flexible tool for non-formal education activities aimed at young people, intercultural groups, volunteers, and social workers.

Thanks to its simple and interactive format, the game facilitates participation even for people with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, creating an informal environment in which to learn together through exchange and play.

A new piece of the EATWISE journey

The card game is part of a broader path developed by the EATWISE project over the past two years. Project activities have already led to the collection of sustainable and intercultural recipes in the Eatwise Cookbook, the creation of the Guide on Sustainable Intercultural Food dedicated to anti-waste practices and culinary traditions, and the development of the Training Manual for educators and youth workers.

With the card game, these contents now take on a new form: more immediate, participatory, and accessible. A way to continue discussing sustainability and interculturality not only through informational materials, but also through collective experiences capable of actively involving people.

Because, just as happens around a shared table, play can also become a space for encounter, dialogue, and mutual discovery.
